Check insurances Check and transfer insurances. Determine if your Homeowner Policy covers removals. If it does not, see our "Insurance" section. Make sure your new home is covered by transferring personal property, theft and other insurances. Organise belongings Start organising your belongings for packing and moving. Be ruthless. With obvious exceptions such as camping or ski gear and some tools, the rule is: if you haven't used or worn it in two years - lose it! You'll find it's not worth the effort and the cost of packing, moving, unpacking and re-storing many such items. Run-down stored food - especially freezer food supplies. Start planning menus that run down your supplies of frozen food. Shop carefully and try not to buy any excess quantities. Begin recycling Plan your Garage Sale and begin your packing with four extra boxes. 'Garage Sale', 'Tip', 'Charity' and 'Return' are a good place to start. A 'Store' box can be a good addition to these if you have things you know you won't be using for a while. |

Weed out any hazard chemicals We are not allowed to transport acids, ammunition, corrosives or flammables (and that includes aerosols). In fact, anything with a 'flammable' symbol cannot be carried in a Mark One Moves truck. Be aware that Gas Cylinders and Lawn Mower fuel tanks will have to be emptied if they are being loaded onto the truck so don't go refuelling tanks. Let them run down so that they will be empty on removal day. Start packing Study the Mark One Moves Packing Hints carefully. Decide which items that you'll pack personally and which you'd like Mark One Moves to pack for you. Start packing those items not needed in the immediate future. For example, rarely used cookery pots, trays, toys, books, out of season clothing. Number each box Write numbers clearly on the tape and add a brief description. Note the box number and description on a Master List. Keep your list handy for Moving Day. Stack your boxes Stack each completed box in the corner of a room, the garage or somewhere out of the way. Order extra boxes and paper Notify us of any need you may have for additional packing boxes and butcher paper. Boxes are available for just $2,50 each if you move with us. |

Notify facility providers Notify the Post Office and get change of address forms. Organise the disconnection of facilities in your home and arrange to recontinue utilities at new premises.Cancel any deliveries (like newspapers & milk) to your present home. Begin to plan 'The Day' Do your best to create a detailed mud map of where you want things in your new place. Start your sanity saving box. Create a 'Moving Day Saviour' by packing a kettle, coffee, tea, sugar, long life milk, mugs and a few spoons. Then add things as you think of them. A can opener and a corkscrew. Some snack food. A bottle of water. Maybe some aspirin. Some hand soap, kitchen cleanser, a few 'mops', toilet paper, a plug, torch, hammer, shifter, screwdriver, possibly even a light globe or two. Use your imagination. It could save your sanity on ‘The Day!’ Mark this box: 'On last: off first.' |

Stay calm Avoid the urge to start tossing things into boxes willy-nilly. Keep packing in a systemised way, remembering to number your boxes and add them to your Master List. Now's the time to start your second 'On last: off first' sanity saving box. This one is all about your comfort at the end of that Big Day. Clean, crisp sheets, big thirsty towels, plump pillows, bed covers, toothbrushes and paste and of course - a bottle of champagne - will all be very welcome on the first night in your new home. Finances Arrange how you'll be paying with Mark One Moves. This can be as indicated on our home page, payable at completion of job and in the case of long distance jobs, before goods are unloaded. Plan the journey Organise maps and any other items you'll need to take in your car. Remember keys, any medicines and important papers. Complete the packing · Pack the personal suitcases that will be travelling with you in your car. · Follow procedures for packing your plants, computers, ect. · Empty your hose of water, coil and tie. · Pack brooms, rakes etc. into one bundle and tie securely. |

THE DAY BEFORE |

· Defrost clean and dry the refrigerator and freezer. (only if moving long distance) · Disconnect washing machine and empty hoses of water. |

MOVING DAY |
||
|
Be ready. Dismantle the beds and any item of furniture that's designed to come apart. Take off any small mirrors. Keep all screws, bolts etc in clearly marked, sealed plastic bags. Place into your ‘Sanity Saver’ box. Check that hoses to the washing machine have been removed and are coiled inside the bowl. The above can be done by our men if you haven't time or are unable to. Anything you can do will make the loading much faster on the day. Animals are especially sensitive to changes on moving day (particularly cats). It's a good idea early on moving day, before the truck arrives, to tie up your dog and to cage the cat, as cats tend to go into hiding, and are difficult to find when you are ready to go. Be available. It's really important that you can be on hand to answer queries, like what things may or may not be going or to sign paperwork. Be organised. Be sure to double check your new address with driver. If the journey is extended, be sure to give him a clear run down of your own plans and movements. (e.g., the route you'll be taking, en route accommodations, number for your car or mobile phone and any other points of contact you may have). Be careful. Before you leave, check, and double check. Look in cupboards, especially bathroom and laundry. Walk around all rooms, garage, storage areas and yard. Make sure all paintings and clocks have been taken off the walls. Check that windows and doors are locked, alarm systems set (if appropriate), that lights are out, taps turned off and keys safely transferred.
