HINTS FOR PACKING |
||
|
Packing Materials Containers should be of uniform size and strong. Those that we supply are ideal. For heavy items such as books and delicate items such as glassware and china, we recommend (and can supply) hardy half size boxes. These pack neatly without excess weight. A per-box weight of 23 kilos (50 lbs.) or less will make the move faster and easier. Label and number each carton (on the tape!) as you go. A brief description of the contents can help too. For example: 'Books. Reference Library' or 'Children Books' is a good idea. Keep a Master List for reference detailing what each numbered box contains. Be sure to have plenty of filling material available. Newspaper is fine although butchers paper is better for packing crockery as there is no ink to mark delicate china. Mark One Moves can supply you with butchers paper by the full ream or a budget half-ream. All cartons need to be taped down - top and bottom. Packing tape 3-4 cm. wide is preferable to masking or gummed tape. Mark One Moves can supply this. Click Here to see our materials prices. China and Glassware · Whatever you're packing, you should be liberal with the crumpled paper. Start off each box with a generous base of paper, and use it between each 'layer' and to fill gaps between individual or groups of items. · Any utensil used for liquid from big measuring jugs down to the finest crystal goblet should first have its bowl filled with crushed paper; then be individually wrapped and packed into an upright position (not lying on its side). · Dinner plates are best stacked standing up on their edge (as if in a dish rack) on top of a base of crushed paper. · All boxes with breakable 'fragile' items should be clearly marked accordingly, on the tape. Computers · Back up all your original files. Store this backup disc in a secure container in a temperature-controlled environment, separate from your original program and installation disks. · If your computer is 5 years or older ensure that the recording heads on your hard drive are parked for transport · Insert an old floppy diskette into the drive. Secure the drive door.
